Why use journal articles?

Journal articles are the backbone of academic research. They provide current, focused, and peer-reviewed information on specific topics.

In Primo, you can search for an article using any of its identifying information, or you can search for an entire journal.

 

Online vs. Print Journal Articles

Online Journal Articles

Online articles can be found by using databases or simply by searching in Primo. Each journal will show a range of dates covered, as well as any limits on material not available:

Print Journals

Print journal articles are found in the library in a physical journal or in microfilm format. You can search for journals in Primo using the Journals Search option or by simply searching in Primo.

You can view the dates covered in print, as well as any gaps in coverage, by scrolling down and viewing the Holdings information:

        


Types of Journal Articles

Original Research

What it is: Original research is a detailed report of a single research study that has been conducted by the author or authors.

What it includes: Research question, methods, data, results, and conclusions.

Use it when: You need primary data or want to see how a study was conducted.

Literature Review

What it is: A summary and analysis of multiple research studies on a specific topic.

What it includes: Trends, gaps, and comparisons across studies or literature that shares a common theme.

Use it when: You want an overview of existing research or to identify key sources in a field.

Methodology / Theoretical Articles

What it is: Articles that introduce or evaluate research methods, models, or theoretical frameworks.

What it includes: Discussions of how to study a concept or apply a theory.

Use it when: You are developing your own study or exploring theoretical applications.

Case Studies

What it is: A detailed examination of a unique situation, specific event, or individual case.

What it includes: Background, analysis, and implications.

Use it when: You are exploring a real-world application or rare example.

News / Opinions / Book Reviews / Letters

What they are: Shorter pieces that provide a commentary, critique, update, or review.

What they include: Editorials, letters to the editor, book reviews, news about the field, and opinion pieces.

Use them when: You need context, expert opinions, or reactions to current events.
